Types of Ada County Court Records

Ada County's record set spans every case the District Court and the Magistrate Division handle. Some records sit fully online. Others remain on paper at the Clerk's office. A few are sealed and stay out of public view. The Magistrate Division carries the high-volume calendars. The District Court carries felonies, larger civil files, and magistrate appeals.

The list below lines up by record type.

  • Criminal cases (CR) — felony trial files in District Court; misdemeanors and infractions in the Magistrate Division.
  • Civil cases (CV) — complaints, answers, motions, orders, writs, foreign judgments, small claims, and renewed judgments.
  • Family law — divorce with or without children, custody, paternity, support, modifications, and civil protection orders.
  • Probate (PR) — wills, letters testamentary or administration, notices to creditors, inventories, accountings, and guardianship or conservatorship.
  • Traffic and infractions — citations, payment status, deferred dispositions, and traffic warrants.
  • Restricted (JV, mental health, adoption) — not part of public iCourt results.

Public Access Framework for Ada County Court Records

Idaho keeps court records on a separate track from general agency records. The Idaho Public Records Act in Title 74, Chapter 1 covers state and local agencies. The Idaho Public Records Act definitions set the building blocks. Court files run under Idaho Court Administrative Rule 32, which the Idaho Supreme Court adopted to balance access with privacy and safety.

The statute screenshot below shows the definition page used to interpret most public records questions.

Idaho Public Records Act definitions used for Ada County court records

That section names what counts as a public record and who counts as a custodian. The relationship between the Public Records Act and the courts is set by Idaho Code Section 74-104, which sends court files under court rules. ICAR 32 then sets the open-by-default position for court declarations and open-proceeding records.

The follow-up screenshot below shows the Section 74-104 page where the judicial relationship is described.

Idaho Code 74-104 on judicial records and Ada County access

Fees fall under Idaho Code Section 74-102. Idaho residents receive the first two hours of staff time and the first 100 pages with no charge when statutory conditions apply. Beyond that, the agency may charge at the lowest qualified staff rate.

Note: Some Ada County case events appear in iCourt only after the clerk completes data entry, so a brand-new filing may not show on the day it is filed.

Records That Are Sealed or Confidential in Ada County

ICAR 32 controls Ada County's sealed-record rules. The portal hides sealed cases and sealed event entries. Juvenile court records, adoption files, mental health proceedings, child protective cases, and grand jury material are restricted by statute and rule. Search warrant affidavits stay sealed until the warrant is returned. The Sheriff's records process strips victim and witness identifiers and holds open-investigation files under Idaho Code Section 74-105.

Petitions to view a sealed record run through the court that issued the sealing order. Parties, attorneys, prosecutors, and law-enforcement officers may have access under specific authority. The general public usually does not. ICAR 32 directs the moving party to ask for the least restrictive exception. Juvenile sealing and expungement runs under Idaho Code Section 20-525A. Adult expungement in Idaho is narrower and depends on the offense, the disposition, and the agency that holds the records.

In-Person Ada County Court Record Requests

Some Ada County court records can only be seen in person. The Idaho Judicial Branch separates case information from records in a case. Case status and basic events live online. Documents in the case file may need a courthouse kiosk visit or a Clerk request. The Ada County Clerk runs the Court Public Records Request channel. Use it for certified copies, file inspections, and sealed-record questions you can address.

The Clerk's request landing page sorts requests by type and routes each one to the right office.

Ada County Court Records Search Tips

iCourt rewards a careful search. The Tyler engine uses exact matches when the field is filled, so a small typo can hide a real case. Common names return long result lists. A middle initial, a case prefix, or a narrow filing-date range will cut the noise. For a known case, a case number is faster than any name search. The portal also keeps prior session history off the screen between visits, so start fresh each time.

Try these adjustments when a case will not come up:

  • Try aliases or maiden names for family law and divorce files.
  • Add the middle initial when the last name is common.
  • Use the Search Hearings tab with a narrow date range for a court date you already know.
  • Check the Sheriff arrest page for the statute or charge label, then search iCourt by name or case number.
  • Call the Ada County Clerk at (208) 287-6879 if a case is older or migrated from a pre-iCourt system.

Q: Can I download Ada County court documents from iCourt?
Not always. The Idaho Judicial Branch says case status is online, but records from a case need a courthouse kiosk or a Clerk request. Some orders, judgments, and pleadings are only available on paper or by certified copy. Plan for a kiosk visit when a copy must be filed in another court or used by a bank or title company.
